EARTHQUAKE:
PRAY FOR TURKEY
A devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the Turkish province of Kahramanmaras,
Afterwards followed by a 7.5 magnitude aftershock nine hours later.
One of the strongest earthquakes to hit the region in a century hit residents in their beds at around 4 am on February 6th, 2023.
Tremors are sent as far away as Lebanon and Israel.
Monday’s quake is believed to be the strongest to hit Turkey since 1939.
At the time, when an earthquake of the same magnitude killed 30,000 people.
It was also the deadliest earthquake to have affected Syria since the 1822 Aleppo earthquake,
Above all,
It was one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in the Levant,
Also the deadliest earthquake worldwide since the 2010 Haiti earthquake.
It was felt and caused structural damage as far as Israel, Lebanon, Cyprus, and the Black Sea coast.
Earthquakes of this magnitude are quite rare,
They are recorded with fewer than five occurring each year on average, anywhere in the world.
Seven quakes with a magnitude 7.0 or greater have struck Turkey in the past 25 years,
But Monday’s is the most powerful.
Devastating earthquake on February 6th is believed to be the strongest to hit Turkey since 1939.
The earthquake had more than 1.000 aftershocks,
Including an unusually powerful magnitude of 7.7 nine hours after the mainshock.
Burden of Kahramanmaras Earthquake
At least 13 million people in the region have been impacted,
And,
4 million buildings were affected by the earthquake and aftershock.
Around 12.141 buildings collapsed in 10 provinces across Turkey. Tens of thousands were trapped under rubble when buildings collapsed.
According to official reports more than 50.000 people have died as of the fifth day of the devastating earthquake,
And rescuers are still racing overtime to pull survivors from beneath the rubble.
Devastating Earthquake
However, those numbers are unfortunately expected to increase, likewise geophysics professor, Övgün Ahmet Ercan stated:
“Deaths may rise to 150.000 – 180.000 as search and rescue activities continue.”
A large winter storm hampered rescue efforts,
Dropping snow on the ruins and bringing plummeting temperatures.
Due to the freezing temperatures in the area,
Survivors, especially those trapped under debris, are at a great risk of hypothermia.
Additionally, the earthquake caused broad fissures on roads that hinders access,
And providing humanitarian aid to earthquake survivors.
